ABSTRACT
Self-efficacy is an individuals ability to cope in challenging situation and is used as a mediating mechanism in treatment of overweigh. Our objective was to evaluate the predictability of the pretreatment self-efficacy scores for a subsequent success in weight loss in 30 overweight postmenopausal women enrolled in the weight loss study. Participants rated their confidence to resist eating by completing the Weight Efficacy Life-Style Questionnaire (WEL) containing 20 items clustered in 5 categories. Categories included Negative Emotion (I can resist eating when depressed), Availability (I can control eating when there are many foods available), Social Pressure (I can resist eating when others are pressuring me to eat), Physical Discomfort (I can resist eating when physically run-down), and Positive Activities (I can control eating while watching TV, reading). Percent difference in weight was 4.6±3.1 (mean±SD) at 10 weeks of intervention. Pretreatment assessments revealed that Negative Emotions, Availability and Social Pressure were the best predictors for the rate of weight loss at weeks 4,6,8, and 10 (p<0.05) in multiple regression models controlled for the initial weight. In conclusion, participants who are able to control negative emotions, resist the availability of food and pressure to eat by others, might be more successful in losing weight.
