EDITOR'S COMMENT

http://www.fasebj.org

Vincent T. Marchesi, Editor-in-Chief

Beginning this month, The FASEB Journal enters the Cyberage with the full text of its Volume 12 (1998 issues) available on line!

Although many readers will still have their own print copies, the on-line version (www.fasebj.org) does offer features not available in print, including 1) access to MedLine abstracts of referenced articles, 2) access to the full text of selected articles, and 3) the ability to perform keyword searches across The FASEB Journal database.

As we gain more experience with this new medium we hope to add additional features, including 4) the ability to receive separate e-mail alerts to articles of particular interest, 5) advance e-mail notification of upcoming tables of contents, and new features still in development.

Obviously, the on-line version of the Journal offers many other possibilities for scientific communication. Many of the reviews that we now publish attempt to summarize the status of a field that sometimes moves ahead significantly between the time the review is finalized and its appearance in print. We are looking into the possibility of offering on-line `updates' of reviews that report on recent additions or corrections to the print version. Someday it may be possible to offer `working' reviews online, in which large numbers of investigators collaborate in the analysis of experimental results. Such a production would benefit from the thoughts of many investigators, and the product would be available to the entire worldwide scientific community at the time it is created.

We welcome suggestions and comments from readers.

Access will be free for the next six months.
